As a kid, I would sneak my younger sister's coloring books into bed with me at night and color crazy, elaborate coloring pages. In middle school I took "Home Economics" and made myself some shorts, a stuffed dinosaur, and who knows what else. I loved being creative, but I was the sporty sister, not the artsy one, so I let my creativity dwindle until it was almost gone. But my creativity was still there, waiting. In 2009, I was a few years out of the military, my husband was in college, our daughter was almost 4 years old, and it was cheaper for me to stay home with her than put her in day care. We had to be very carful with money so I got thrifty. And crafty. And my creativity bounded into the light of day, never to be suppressed again. Crocheting was my gateway craft. I could work on a project while hanging out with the family on movie nights, making me feel productive despite just sitting around. But yarn was getting expensive. That's when I fell down the rabbit hole of recycled crafts. "Frogging" a sweater to reuse the yarn, turning books into purses, ironing plastic bags to make fabric, crocheting with plarn (yarn from plastic bags) or old t-shirts, and a long, long list of other fantastic ways to be creative while also saving money AND the planet.Creativity + an infinite supply of cheap material = JOYI have happily lived in that upcycled/recycled rabbit hole ever since. There is so much joy for me in turning "trash" into something fun and functional, to see potential in everything around me.And I can't wait to share that joy of creativity with you!
